Oscar winning director Suzanne Bier (In a Better World) has crafted a terrifically engaging romantic comedy with complex and intriguing characters. The story is woven with wickedly funny moments beautifully set at a wedding in Sorrento, Italy attended by Phillip (Pierce Brosnan), workaholic businessman cum father-of-the-groom and Ida (Trine Dyrholm), cancer survivor and recently cheated on mother-of-the-bride.
Our two leads first run into each other (literally a fender-bender) at the airport on the way to their children’s wedding. In lesser hands, such a contrived moment might ring hollow but instead, it establishes the charming chemistry between them.
At the seaside villa in Sorrento where the wedding is to be held and where Philip once lived with his wife, conflicts arise not least between the soon-to-be newlyweds. Add in the arrival of Ida's cheating husband, with his new paramour-in-tow, and Ida's lustful sister-in-law and the stage is set for a meticulously crafted story populated by beautifully drawn characters who are broad yet never cartoonish.
When the young couple's future happiness is suddenly in peril, Ida and Philip are brought together to try to set things straight — and find that life might have a second chance in store for them as well.
Pierce Brosnan leads a great ensemble cast that brings out the eccentricities — and the love — that live in all families. Equal parts perceptive, intelligent, light hearted and enjoyable, Love is All You Need is a salute to the resiliency of the human spirit and our ability to move forward in the face of adversity.
